Identifying features:  Dorsal fin with 7 spines and 11-12 soft rays.   Eye rim mostly red in color.  Caudal fin without black or reddish tips.   Large nostrils almost touching one another.  The dorsal-fin base is longer than the anal-fin base and the anal fin has 4 spines and 11-12 soft rays.

Comparisons:  Unique among red-fishes in having 7 spines in the dorsal fin.  Lacks the belly scutes typical of the similar looking roughies (Trachichthyidae).

Fillets:  A deep short fillet tapering sharply towards the tail.   The flesh is soft to medium textured with a delicate flavor.

Habitat:  Schools around rocky reefs and muddy bottoms in depths of between 5 - 400 metres.  It feeds off a wide variety of small fish, crustaceans and molluscs fastened to rocks.
