Whole size:
10-80 kg

Identifying features: Metalic dark blue above changing through yellow to silvery white on belly. Moderate to long pectoral fins, second dorsal fin greatly extended. Large fleshy keel on caudal peduncle flanked by 2 smaller keels.

Comparisons: Differs in having more rakers on the first gill arch (26-34 versus 19-27), much longer second dorsal and anal fins and a heavier bodied tail.

Fillets: Bright red raw, grayish brown when cooked. excellent raw.

Habitat: Marine; pelagic in the open ocean. Main fishing grounds northeast of New Zealand between East Cape and North Cape.

Catching method: Surface longliners and drifting longliners.
